Sometimes the best opportunities come wrapped in change.

Fuji Crystal Archive Matte Photographic Paper has been a solid choice for years, chosen by photographers and artists across all genres. However, due to changes in the manufacturer’s supply, we will be retiring this option from our lineup. Now is the perfect time to discover four photo paper alternatives that provide something for everyone – from a similar appearance, to a "true matte" finish, and beyond.

What distinguished Matte Paper (even if subtle)?

Matte (Photo Paper)

Those who haven't seen Matte Photographic Paper might say it's actually a semi-gloss rather than a true matte finish. The jump from Matte to Lustre (see below) is subtle for this reason. Matte Paper is a physically smooth paper, but its slight sheen gives it a similar appearance to Lustre's pebble texture. When comparing with Lustre, some photographers call out Matte's slightly more satin appearance.

Lustre (Photo Paper)

Our go-to recommendation for the closest match to Matte

Lustre has become one of the most popular professional photo paper surfaces, for good reason. Similar to Matte, the fine-grain pebble texture lends a finish right between matte and semi-gloss. This results in high depth of color and vibrant saturation without the glare issues. It feels substantial, and clients love it. Once you see firsthand, you'll understand why we made Lustre our go-to comparison to Matte. Add Lustre Coating, and you'll achieve an even closer match to its satin appearance described above.

Deep Matte Velvet (Photo Paper)

Fujicolor Crystal Archive

This professional photo paper combines a Deep Matte, completely non-reflective surface with a velvety feel that gives it the stylistic uniqueness that the name suggests. Because there is absolutely no glare, there is also a lighter appearance in dark tones. Combined with the fingerprint-proof tactile element, Deep Matte Velvet is distinguished from standard Matte finishes.

Entrada Bright Rag (Fine Art Paper)

290gsm, 100% Cotton, Museum-Quality

Pure cotton, bright white, built for longevity. The cotton base of Moab Entrada Bright Rag provides rich color accuracy and the kind of substantial feel that serious buyers appreciate. Unlike Matte Photo Paper, it is hands down a "true matte" finish, but unlike Deep Matte Velvet, it displays exceptional depth in black tones. For this reason, it works extremely well for both black and white photography and fine art.

Epson Premium Luster (Fine Art Paper)

260gsm, RC Paper, Wide-Gamut

Professional presentation with sophisticated semi-gloss finish. The ultra-white base makes colors vibrant, paired with a consistent feel to our Matte and Lustre Photo Papers. Of our Fine Art Papers, Epson Premium Luster provides the closest match to Matte Photographic Paper. Like Lustre Photo Paper, it displays a semi-gloss finish with a slight pebble texture. Perfect for exhibition work or high-end client deliveries where first impressions matter.
