Art and Business During the Pandemic: Inspiration from Devin Elle Kurtz

Updated: Feb 7, 2022

Long time Bay Photo customer, Devin Elle Kurtz is about to have her first art book printed.

During the pandemic Devin had to retool her business model to fit the altered business landscape that COVID has created. Most of the 2020 and all of the 2021 conventions where she has sold her art in the past were cancelled. She decided to create a new art series each quarter of the year and started doing online sales centered around each series. She has used Bay Photo Lab for over 8 years and decided to ramp up her online sales with many of our high quality printing options. The sales have been successful with over 1000 orders fulfilled by Bay Photo Lab. Her main Bay Photo products are Photographic Prints, MetalPrints, Canvas Wraps, Press Printed Posters and Press Printed BayBooks. Last fall she was approached by 3dTotal, a UK-based book publisher, to create an art book telling her journey. At 24 years old, she is currently one of the youngest international artists to be chosen by 3dTotal for an art book project.

After graduating from Santa Cruz High School in 2014, Devin has pursued a career as a digital illustrator. She has mainly worked for Rough Draft Studios in Burbank, CA doing backgrounds for the Netflix series, Disenchantment. She also had a successful business selling her personal digital and traditional illustrations at Comic and Anime Conventions around the United States until the COVID pandemic hit.

Much of Devin's inspiration for her art comes from the ocean areas around her hometown of Santa Cruz, CA and her many visits to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Devin says that much of her inspiration for her art comes from the ocean areas around her hometown of Santa Cruz, CA and her many visits to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. During the pandemic Devin came back to Santa Cruz to focus on her independent art career and for more inspiration from the natural surroundings of Santa Cruz. She says this has been the silver lining to the pandemic lockdown.

Devin’s book was launched by 3dTotal through a Kickstarter, which recently began and runs through April 18th. The Kickstarter has already met its initial funding goal and has surpassed $100K in pledges, but books are still available through the Kickstarter.
