MetalPrints have the ability to add dramatic draw an interior space, which appealed to Kody and Lisa McCormick (of The Outbound Life) when considering their DIY living room project. Kody got into the travel photo and video space because of his passion for travel, so naturally this became the theme of Kody and Lisa's new living room, with the help of The Home Depot. Let's dive into what inspired the McCormicks, and how they were able to transform their living space into an inspiring sanctuary. Scroll to watch the video (including before-and-after views!).
"Travel is a huge part of our lives - it's one of our favorite things to do together. So we wanted to make sure this space was inspired by some of our favorite places that we've ever been together." - Kody McCormick
"We wanted a space that not only takes us back to some of our favorite memories, but also one that draws out stories and conversations from friends and family about their own travel adventures." - Lisa McCormick
How did your photography play a role when envisioning your new living room design?
As kids, some of our fondest memories were traveling with our family to new places, and as a photographer, I've always dreamt of printing some of my favorite pieces in a big way. I have many photos that I love, so it was hard to select the right ones. I had an ongoing group of select photos from over the years, but my main piece for the living room was actually found in raw assets only days before sending to print. Sometimes it takes another fresh look at your work to find the gems.
We love to be involved with special projects like this one. What led you to choose Bay Photo?
I printed through Bay Photo due to a recommendation from my friend Chris Burkard. His work precedes himself. I wanted a large print, roughly 8 feet, so I knew I had to have it done right.
MetalPrints were an awesome choice. How did you land on your preferred display options?
I printed 3 pieces for this room. My main statement piece was a 40x90" MetalPrint in Mid-Gloss, with Natural Edge Exhibit Mount and the Cleat Hanger. My other 2 pieces were smaller, yet still sizable. We went with a 20x40" and 45x30". All 3 pieces were done with the same finishes and display to keep the room aesthetic consistent. We chose the MetalPrint due to the bold, sleek look it provided. The Mid-Gloss was a happy medium as I have windows in the room and I didn’t want too much reflection. Lastly, I chose the Cleat Hanger because it was super simple and low profile.
How was your experience from ordering to delivery?
The print process was quite simple. I developed my file according to the ratio of the print. Bay Photo reviewed it to ensure it would print well, and that was it. Shortly after a wooden crate arrived at my home with the prints in tip top shape. The wooden crate really did its job in ensuring the prints arrived flawlessly.
Your MetalPrints look stunning! How are you liking your new living space?
The room turned out much better than I could have ever expected. My photography now serves as the focal point to the room, while complimenting the surrounding furniture and other design elements. It’s very exciting to be able to have guests over and reminisce over travel memories. It’s fun watching friends study the details of the 40x90". Everyone seems to find some new elements captured in the photo.
