Many photographers approach gallery walls the same way - pick images, guess at sizes, order what feels right, cross their fingers on install day. That's rarely the most effective workflow. Without a clean plan, it can create challenges during installation and impact the client experience.

As a photographer designing and installing gallery walls, it's important to have a clear, repeatable process. It starts with evaluating the wall, moves through layout and product decisions, and ends with a well-planned installation.

Step 1: Read the Wall Before You Order Anything

The wall is the foundation of the project.

Measure the full usable space - both width and height - and consider any furniture or architectural elements that will affect the final display. A gallery wall doesn't exist in isolation, so account for everything that will share the visual space before placing an order.

Take note of the room's lighting throughout the day. Photograph the empty wall during the hours the space gets the most use, as this will serve as a valuable reference when selecting print products and finishes later in the planning process.

The Fastest Way to Set Up a Gallery Wall for Photographers: Clusters & Splits

Many photographers spend significant time planning gallery wall layouts - taping outlines on walls, sketching arrangements, and testing different size combinations to see what works.

Our Clusters & Splits streamline that process by providing professionally designed gallery wall arrangements that are ready to order. With 17 curated layouts available in 44 size combinations - across Canvas Wraps, MetalPrints, ThinWraps, Wood Prints, and Acrylic Prints, photographers can spend less time planning and more time creating. Each arrangement is designed with 1" spacing between prints, making installation straightforward and consistent.

Clusters vs. Splits -- one decision to make first:

Clusters feature a different image on each panel within a coordinated layout. Different images, one arrangement. A pet portrait session can be displayed across three panels, while a family's favorite vacation memories can be featured throughout a larger arrangement like Timeless.

Splits take a different approach, dividing a single image across multiple panels to create a dramatic multi-piece display. A landscape image can become a Portrait Triptych, white an architectural image can be transformed into a Tic Tac Toe arrangement. The image becomes the focal point of the design.

Arrangements worth knowing for gallery wall installs:

Portrait Triptych - Three panels displayed side by side, available in 12 size options, ranging from 38x18" overall up to 122x60". It's clean, balanced design makes it one of the most versatile arrangements for a wide range of photographic styles.

Tic Tac Toe - Nine equal panels arranged in a grid, available in five overall sizes from 20x20" up to 62x95". This layout creates strong visual impact and works especially well as a statement piece within a larger space.

Timeless - One larger anchor panel paired with four smaller supporting pieces, available in five overall sizes from 37x20" up to 81x40". The varied panel sizes create visual interest while maintaining a cohesive design.

Filmstrip - Six 8x8" panels surrounding a 26x26" center piece for an overall size of 44x26". This arrangement is particularly effective for narrower wall spaces and sequential storytelling.

Window - Four panels arranged in an asymmetrical layout, available in four overall sizes from 32x20" to 62x40". It offers the character of a custom gallery wall while maintaining the simplicity of a pre-designed arrangement.

Clusters and Splits are priced at 10% less than ordering the same prints individually. Clusters can be ordered directly online, while both Clusters and Splits are available in Bay ROES.

Step 3: Match Substrate to Room

With the arrangement selected, the next step is choosing the substrate. This is a more technical decision that directly affects the final look, feel and presentation of the gallery.

MetalPrints -- Images are infused directly into ChromaLuxe aluminum sheets for a sleek, modern finish. Available in five surfaces: High Gloss, Mid-Gloss, Satin, Sheer Glossy, and Sheer Satin. Sheer surfaces allow the aluminum to subtly show through the image, while Mid-Gloss delivers strong color intensity with reduced glare. MetalPrints are available in Clusters and Splits with Float Mount, Inset Frame, Flush Mount, or Stainless Post hanging options.

Wood Prints -- Printed on 1/2" thick certified sustainable maple wood panels. The Natural finish allows the wood grain to show through lighter areas of the image, while the White finish uses a white ink underlay for more accurate color reproduction while still preserving the wood texture. Because of the natural material, every print is unique. Available in Natural or White finish in Clusters and Splits.

Canvas Wraps -- Available in Clusters and Splits with a choice of border color and three stretcher bar depths (3/4", 1-1/2", or 2-1/2"), offering flexibility in both presentation style and visual depth.

Acrylic Prints -- Fine art prints face-mounted to plexiglass with polished edges. Available in Clusters online for Tic Tac Toe, Four Square, Portrait Triptych, Square Triptych, and Landscape Triptych.

ThinWraps - Available in standard or Softop ThinWraps with five surface options that balance durability, color fidelity, and a clean modern presentation.

  • MetalPrints High Gloss or Mid-Gloss → Best for controlled or lower-ambient-light rooms; Mid-Gloss where glare is a variable.

  • Wood Prints Natural → Ideal for subjects where organic texture enhances the image: landscapes, outdoor, lifestyle.

  • Canvas → Well-suited for residential installs where a softer, more tactile material feel integrates natually into the space.

  • Acrylic → Best for high-contrast imagery and modern interiors where a high-impact finish and clean edges contribute to a gallery style-presentation.

Step 4: Sizing for Clusters & Splits

The arrangement sizes are already defined - 44 size combinations across 17 groupings. The decision at this stage is simply which overall scale best fits the wall.

Two inputs determine the correct size:

Wall ratio: The total footprint of the arrangement, including the built-in 1" spacing between panels, should feel proportionate to the usable wall space. This ensures the installation reads as intentional within the room rather than floating or overcrowded.

Viewing distance: Consider how far viewers typically stand from the wall in everyday use. A Portrait Triptych at 38x18" overall will read very differently at 8' compared to 92x40". Always size for the room and viewing experience, not just the image itself.

With Clusters and Splits, the sizing decisions are already structured. Select the arrangement, choose the size that fits the wall ratio, and proceed to order. Let the Client See It Before You Order

This is the step that makes the approval conversation significantly easier.

Our Wall Preview tool, built into Online Ordering, allows you to create a realistic preview using a photo of your client's actual space. Upload an image of the room, then use a known measurement in the space - such as a couch, window, or doorframe - to calibrate scale. The tool then places your selected arrangement on the wall at accurate proportions.

From there, you can drop in images, adjust placement if needed, and generate a shareable link for your client to review before anything is ordered.

Seeing the artwork on their own wall, at true-to-scale sizing, removes much of the uncertainty that can slow down approvals. It's a simple step in the ordering process that helps ensure clarity and alignment heading into installation.

Step 5: Proof Before You Commit the Full Order

Before a full Cluster or Split order, it's important to proof both the substrate and the image combination.

MetalPrint sample packs allow you to test all five surfaces using your own imagery at production quality before committing to a full Cluster or Split order. This is especially valuable when working with larger arrangements - such as a triptych split across three MetalPrint panels -- where the surface choice and finish will significantly impact the final results.

Photographers who consistently deliver gallery walls installations without last-minute changes on install day reply on a repeatable workflow: reading the wall, selecting an arrangement from a pre-engineered system, matching the substrate to the room, sizing based on wall ratio and viewing distance, securing client approval through a live preview, and proofing the substrate before committing to the full order.

Clusters & Splits - 17 arrangements, 44 size combinations, and five substrate options - provide the structure layout decisions. The Wall Preview tool supports the client approval process. From there, execution comes down to following a consistent system and applying it the same way each time.
