TeamBay had the privilege of printing portraits of the Santa Cruz High School Class of 2020 for the ongoing "Hats Off Santa Cruz Grads!" exhibition. Students and grads in our local community (and everywhere) have shown us through the pandemic just what can be accomplished with determination and grit. We're thankful for the opportunity to uphold the SCHS graduates' proudest moments on our strongest print medium - MetalPrints.
About The Exhibit
“Hats Off Santa Cruz Grads!” is an interactive exhibition celebrating Santa Cruz High School’s Class of 2020 through portraits, stories, and interactive components such as a graduation stage to walk across and gowns to dress up in. The portraits of the graduates were taken during the Santa Cruz High Senior Celebration that was held at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s parking lot on June 5, 2020 while the stories come from a series of oral histories recorded with the graduates shortly thereafter. The Class of 2020 deserves to be celebrated for finishing high school under unimaginable circumstances with grace. Their stories can help us all make meaning of our own pandemic experience.
The character traits the Class of 2020 exemplified while finishing high school in a pandemic, such as acceptance and kindness, are part of the essence of being a Cardinal and weave through time binding generations of Santa Cruz High Cardinals into one living legacy. Students’ embodiment of these core traits is even evident over a century ago with the Class of 1919, which was the first class of seniors to endure an epidemic.
In this exhibition the graduates from Santa Cruz High’s Class of 2020 will show you that you are not alone, we’re fortunate to call Santa Cruz home, political power matters, it is okay to ask for help, you don’t need permission from anyone to be yourself, love is an indissoluble foundation for community, and change happens when we work together.
